The StoryWalk project involves books that have pages from wonderful childrens' books which have been mounted on cardstock and laminated then attached to stakes. They are then placed along walking paths and park routes for all to enjoy.Idea sent by Finola Cournane of Richford Site
Oftentimes, the books are all young childrens' books with minmal text to keep the readers moving along. Just like a library, the books are free and available to be borrowed for a maximum of 2 weeks.
If you decide to make your own StoryWalk, here are some tips:
- You will need to purchase 2 books (by law, no photocopies can be made) so that each side of each page can be mounted.
- Weather - especially rain - can ruin a book so make sure that the books you select have smaller pages to ensure a wide margin of laminate to seal it thoroughly. Use thicker laminate for this purpose.
- Hardwood stakes are longer lasting than pine (softwood) stakes.
- Books whose illustrations cross the center don't work well for this application so that limits the books that can be used.
- A great story is a key to drawing the readers along, regardless of their ages.
