Enosburg has been a GFL site since 1998. Earleen Bosely is the heart and soul of the program serving up to 60 kids a day with snacks, games, crafts, and a full lunch. The many large raised bed gardens are spread around the perimeter of the school and the children take a daily walk about of the gardens to make observations of what is growing.
Gardens for Learning Sign
Making a Gardens for Learning Sign is a great way to give visibility to your programs to the larger community. You can have them printed and reuse them every year, make a large painted sign, or even a paper temporary sign. With a sign, the children can feel a sense of pride and connection to the program. Take a photo of the children and their sign and send into your local paper for added excitement and publicity.
Scarecrows
Making scarecrows is an activity that is so much fun. It is a great way to talk about animal pests in the garden but more importantly it helps the children make a connection to their garden by adding a personal and creative piece of art work to it!
Vegetable Taste Test
What color bell pepper do kids like the most – red, orange, yellow or green? Make a vegetable taste chart of your own to find out. You may be surprised by the results! This is a wonderful way to talk about the importance of having as many colors of fruits and vegetables in your diet as possible and provide children the opportunity to try something new. It is amazing what children will try and discover that they like when they experience the process of preparing the vegetables and feel encouraged by the positive response of their friends.
